Applying Polish and Compound:
When applying a polishing compound (bar type), hold the compound on the wheel while it is not rotating. Turn the wheel on briefly then off while the wheel coasts to a stop. Repeat until the desired amount of compound has been applied to the wheel.
For metal polishes (creams and diamond compounds), apply either water for water based compound or oil for oil based compounds to the wheel prior to powering the wheel on. Apply the polish to a clean cotton cloth. Touch the cloth to the wheel using the same method as with the bar type compound.
Truing the Wheel:
The surface irregularities of a felt wheel will cause vibration and make accurate honing difficult. The factory “trues” both sides of the wheel; however, “truing” your felt wheel is still a good idea if you are re-installing it or if you have been using it for a long period of time.
Removing any surface irregularities from time to time increases the life of a felt wheel. First, use a piece of bar stock or other square-edged steel item to remove any build-up of honing compound prior to “truing” the felt wheel. This compound will clog the sanding drum. Then mount a 1/2″ sanding drum fitted with a 60x sleeve in an electric hand drill. Bring the sanding drum against the wheel with both the wheel and the drill spinning. Follow the contour of the wheel’s face and sides, making light passes. Continue until the wheel is no longer eccentric and is restored to the desired condition.
Check the arbor nuts on both sides of the grinder as braking action of “truing” the felt wheel might loosen them. Always practice safety when using power tools. Wear eye protection, masks and gloves. Keep children away from power tools.
